Dave Smith was the Lake Hotel winterkeeper In Yellowstone National Park from 1975 to 1981. He's working on a memoir about his life in the park. Dave is the author of Alaska's Mammals, Backcountry Bear Basics, and Don't Get Eaten.
When Dave put on his x-c skis and went out to greet the dawn over Yellowstone Lake in winter, he was often reminded of Karen Blixen's words in Out of Africa: ''The views were immensely wide — everything that you saw made for greatness and freedom, and unequalled nobility. You woke in the morning and thought: Here I am, where I ought to be."
